Find the right fit for your young fan with our Great Lakes Loons youth jersey sizing guide. Learn how to measure, choose between replica fits, and avoid common sizing mistakes.
Quick Answer
For most kids, choose a youth jersey based on chest measurement and height, not age. If between sizes, size up for room to grow and a more relaxed replica fit.
Why Size Charts Beat Age Labels
Kids grow at different rates, and age-based sizing often misses the mark. A 10-year-old can wear anything from a Youth Small to a Youth Large depending on height and build. Measuring your child's chest and height gives you a reliable starting point, then you can adjust based on how they like their jerseys to fit.
Replica Jerseys: Room to Move
Replica jerseys are designed for fans, not players. They typically have a more relaxed cut than authentic on-field jerseys, which means there's a little extra room through the body and sleeves. That's great for layering over a t-shirt or hoodie on cooler game days, but it can make the jersey look oversized if you're used to slim-fitting apparel.
Limited Edition vs. Everyday Options
Some youth jerseys, like the Great Lakes Loons Mickey Mouse Replica Jersey, are limited edition and may sell out quickly. If you're buying a special occasion jersey, consider sizing up for longevity so your child can wear it for more than one season. Everyday replicas are easier to replace, so you might prefer a more precise fit.
Decision Rules for Youth Jersey Sizing
- Measure chest and height: Use a soft measuring tape around the fullest part of the chest and measure height without shoes. Compare these numbers to the size chart rather than relying on age. Record measurements before shopping so you can check multiple products quickly.
- Between sizes? Size up: If your child falls between two sizes, choose the larger size. This allows for growth spurts and gives a comfortable, relaxed fit typical of replica jerseys.
- Consider layering: If the jersey will be worn over a hoodie or thick sweatshirt, go up one full size from the chart recommendation. If it's for summer games over a t-shirt, stick with the chart size. Think about the weather and typical game-day outfits before deciding.
- Check the return policy: Before ordering, confirm the store's exchange policy for youth apparel. If you're unsure between two sizes, ordering both and returning the one that doesn't fit can save a second shipping wait. Keep tags on and try the jersey on over the layers your child will actually wear.
